Conditions
of use
A cell with saccular mitochondria from the zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland (rat)
(for unlabelled original image click here, please!)

C = cytoplasm (cellular fluid + organelles); Ec = euchromatin (transcription happens here);
Ga = Gutta adipis (lipid droplet); Hc = heterochromatin (condensed DNA); Mi = mitochondria (of the saccular type);
Mne = Membrana nuclearis externa (outer nuclear membrane);
Mni = Membrana nuclearis interna (inner nuclear membrane); N = Nucleus (nucleus);
Nc = Nucleolus (nucleolus); P = Plasmalemma (cell membrane);
SER = smooth endoplasmic reticulum (glucocorticoid synthesis happens here);
SER* = smooth endoplasmic reticulum (widened).

Mitochondria of the saccular type are a special form of the tubular type. Here the tubes inside the mitochondria have
many dilatations and very thin and short connections between these, therefore when sectioned, this gives the
impression that these mitochondria were filled with lots of vesicles.
